Alexander doesn't actually have to work to accomplish any of the things he does, and he achieves none of his originally stated goals. His mother sends him out to ask Drustan for support in revenge against March for killing his father. He stops in the middle of that and never goes back to it, and we never hear about Drustan again. Morgan le Fay sends him out to get the Holy Grail for her. He stops in the middle of that and never goes back to it, and we vaguely hear that Morgan is destined to be thwarted in all her schemes to hurt Arthur. Yet Alexander is still the hero of the book and gets rewarded for doing nothing more than falling instantly in love. Obviously there is something bigger going on here. He is being led not to achieve any of his goals and instead is brought to his true destiny without any effort whatsoever: being the husband of Alice. What I think Mary Stewart is trying to get across in this book is that it's OK to not to finish goals you set for yourself if they're not things you're fated to accomplish anyway. Fate will lead you to your true destiny, and falling in love is as easy as breathing once you see the right person. You don't even have to talk to them. You'll just know it in your gut that you are meant to be together forever. That's the importance of fate.samoaphoenixnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5942036945027522552.post-34168599853932047642013-08-28T22:03:48.216-05:002013-08-28T22:03:48.216-05:00So what would the Theme Be?
